When Color Returns: A Story of Community and Hope

When Toby arrived at our program, they carried sadness. Their drawings said it all—everything was in shades of gray. There was no color in their art, nor in their mood. They remained isolated, avoiding connection with other youth.

Everything began to change the day they met Pancho.

Pancho, a small bird who began accompanying Toby during After School Raíces sessions, became a bridge. Other youth approached to interact with Pancho… and little by little, with Toby as well.

What was once silence became conversation. What was once isolation became connection. Toby began to engage, participate, and share.

Then one day, something simple yet powerful happened: Toby created their first painting in color.

That moment marked a turning point. But the transformation didn’t stop there. At Centro, we support families as an essential part of each young person’s well-being, creating spaces where they can grow with trust, care, and a sense of belonging.

This shift was also reflected at home. Toby’s family became more involved, walking alongside them and strengthening their bonds.

Months later, in the midst of family challenges, Toby celebrated their 15th birthday surrounded by their community and family. It was a deeply human and powerful moment—one of connection, shared joy, and hope.

A reminder that, when community and support are present, life slowly begins to fill with color again.

Cuando el color vuelve: una historia de comunidad y esperanza

Cuando Toby llegó a nuestro programa, llegó con tristeza. Sus dibujos lo decían todo: solo pintaba en grises. No había color en sus trazos, ni en su ánimo. Se mantenía aislade, evitando el contacto con otros jóvenes.

Todo empezó a cambiar el día que conoció a Pancho.

Pancho, un pequeño pájaro que comenzó a acompañarle en las sesiones de After School Raíces, se convirtió en un puente. Otros jóvenes se acercaban para interactuar con Pancho… y poco a poco, también con Toby.

Lo que antes era silencio se convirtió en conversación. Lo que antes era aislamiento, en conexión. Toby empezó a integrarse, a participar, a compartir.

Y un día, sucedió algo simple pero poderoso: hizo su primera pintura a color.

Ese momento marcó un antes y un después. Pero el cambio no se detuvo ahí. En Centro, acompañamos a las familias como parte esencial del bienestar de cada joven, creando espacios donde puedan crecer con apoyo, confianza y sentido de pertenencia.

Ese proceso también se reflejó en su hogar. Su familia comenzó a involucrarse más, a acompañar su camino y a fortalecer los lazos que los unen.

Meses después, en medio de desafíos familiares, Toby celebró sus 15 años rodeade de su comunidad y su familia. Fue un momento profundamente humano y poderoso: un espacio de encuentro, de alegría compartida y de esperanza.

Un recordatorio de que, cuando hay comunidad y acompañamiento, la vida poco a poco vuelve a llenarse de color.
