Virtual Event: Día de los Muertos 2020

This year, for the health and safety of our community, Día de los Muertos will be a virtual experience. In continued collaboration with our partner Mia (Minneapolis Institute of Art), we are honoring the occasion with a variety of videos and other interactive elements located here and on Mia’s website. We hope you and your family will join us in exploring the history, symbolism, and art behind this meaningful holiday.

Día de los Muertos: History & Traditions

Gabriela Spears-Rico discusses the history and traditions of Day of the Dead in Mexico. Dr. Spears-Rico is Assistant Professor of Chicanx Latinx Studies with a joint appointment in American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota, and a P’urhepecha/Matlatzinca poet.
The cempasúchil or marigold flower is said to guide or attract the souls of the departed with its scent. Paper flowers are also made to symbolize the cempasúchil and placed on Día de los Muertos ofrendas or altars. In this video, artist Monica Vega shows you how you can make your own flores de papel.

“Day of the Dead is an opportunity to remember those who are no longer with us and, in doing so, keep their spirits alive. I like to think about the afterlife as two different worlds – one inhabited by people who are no longer living but continue to be remembered by friends and relatives, and the other inhabited by those who have been forgotten. The world of those who are remembered is filled with joy and celebration, whereas the world of the forgotten is filled with darkness and despair. And I ask myself, ‘Which of these worlds would I want for my loved ones?’ Day of the Dead is a way for me to actively allow the memories of loved ones to continue to guide and influence my life. As my children help create altars each year, they learn about loved ones they never had the opportunity to meet. Community altars, such as this one, provide an opportunity for us all to connect with the rich historical and cultural roots of our ancestors.”
