Centro: A Home When Our Community Needs Us Most

In collaboration with the Carlson Foundation, an important supporter and partner in our work, this video documents a deeply significant moment in the history of Centro Tyrone Guzman and the Latine community in Minnesota. The Carlson Foundation shares our commitment to strengthening communities and creating opportunities for their stories to be heard, while helping overcome the barriers that many community organizations face in documenting and communicating what happens during moments of crisis and uncertainty.

It was a time of crisis, fear, and uncertainty. Many families in our community were targeted and persecuted, and some people were arbitrarily and illegally detained, leaving entire families facing situations of profound vulnerability. But it was also a time when the community demonstrated its ability to organize and respond collectively.

When we went through one of the most difficult moments in the history of the Latine community in Minnesota, Centro did what it has done for more than 50 years: opened its doors, listened, and responded.

Centro became a place where people could find support, information, food, transportation, accompaniment, and, above all, a safe space they could turn to. A community home where no one had to face those moments alone.

The response did not come from one person or one organization. Families, Centro staff, community leaders, partner organizations, volunteers, and neighbors came together to care for one another, protect one another, and respond to concrete needs. New partnerships emerged, resources were shared, and the community found ways to support one another in the face of an extraordinarily difficult situation.

This experience reflects something essential about who Centro is. For more than five decades, Centro has been much more than a service provider. It has been a home and a place of belonging for the Latino community; a place where different generations come together, learn, grow, support one another, and build community.

This is what it means for Centro to be a community home: to be present, to listen, and to open its doors when people need a place to turn. It is a commitment that has been at the heart of Centro for more than five decades.

Because telling these stories is not simply about looking back at the past. It is about showing who Centro is when our community faces difficult moments: a place that opens its doors, listens, and responds. A community home that is present. A community that does not face crises alone.

En colaboración con la Carlson Foundation, un importante supporter y partner de nuestro trabajo, este video documenta un momento profundamente significativo en la historia de Centro Tyrone Guzman y de la comunidad latina en Minnesota. La Carlson Foundation comparte nuestro compromiso de fortalecer a las comunidades y crear oportunidades para que sus historias sean escuchadas, al mismo tiempo que ayuda a superar las barreras que muchas organizaciones comunitarias enfrentan para documentar y comunicar lo que ocurre durante momentos de crisis e incertidumbre.

Fue un momento de crisis, miedo e incertidumbre. Muchas familias de nuestra comunidad fueron perseguidas y algunas personas fueron detenidas de manera arbitraria e ilegal, dejando a familias enteras enfrentando situaciones de profunda vulnerabilidad. Pero también fue un momento en el que la comunidad demostró su capacidad de organizarse y responder colectivamente.

Cuando atravesamos uno de los momentos más difíciles en la historia de la comunidad latina en Minnesota, Centro hizo lo mismo que ha hecho durante más de 50 años: abrir sus puertas, escuchar y responder.

Centro se convirtió en un lugar donde las personas podían encontrar apoyo, información, alimentos, transporte, acompañamiento y, sobre todo, un espacio seguro al que podían acudir. Un hogar comunitario donde nadie tenía que enfrentar esos momentos en soledad.

La respuesta no vino de una sola persona ni de una sola organización. Familias, personal de Centro, líderes comunitarios, organizaciones aliadas, voluntarios y vecinos se unieron para cuidarse, protegerse y responder a necesidades concretas. Surgieron nuevas alianzas, se compartieron recursos y la comunidad encontró maneras de apoyarse mutuamente frente a una situación extraordinariamente difícil.

Esta experiencia refleja algo esencial sobre quién es Centro. Durante más de cinco décadas, Centro ha sido mucho más que un proveedor de servicios. Ha sido un hogar y un espacio de pertenencia para la comunidad latina; un lugar donde distintas generaciones se encuentran, aprenden, crecen, se apoyan mutuamente y construyen comunidad.

Esto es lo que significa para Centro ser un hogar comunitario: estar presente, escuchar y abrir sus puertas cuando las personas necesitan un lugar al cual acudir. Es un compromiso que ha estado en el corazón de Centro durante más de cinco décadas.

Porque contar estas historias no es simplemente mirar hacia el pasado. Es mostrar quién es Centro cuando nuestra comunidad enfrenta momentos difíciles: un lugar que abre sus puertas, escucha y responde. Un hogar comunitario que está presente. Una comunidad que no enfrenta las crisis sola.

Este video reconoce a las personas que hicieron posible una respuesta colectiva, basada en el cuidado, la dignidad, la solidaridad y la responsabilidad compartida.
