Traditional Healing and Traditional Healing workshops are provided at Centro Tyrone Guzman during the year for women, elders and their families.
Family Planning Community Educator Trainings
Weekly “Entre Amigas” workshops are offered twice a year for Latinas in partnership with Planned Parenthood. Sessions focus on educating and empowering Latinas as community educators who can share information, education, and resources about sexual and reproductive health to others in the community.
Domestic Violence Prevention Classes
Centro Tyrone Guzman partners with experts in the field to offer research-based curriculum focused on domestic violence prevention for immigrant Latinas. The curriculum addresses such topics as “Familism and Machismo,” “Influences of Past Traumas,” and “Factors Influencing Relationships.” A recent research study conducted by St. Catherine University found that the program increased women’s self-esteem and knowledge of domestic violence, and changed women’s behavior and thoughts about relationships.
“Tomando Control de su Salud” Chronic Disease Prevention
This six-week, evidence-based program provides participants with the information, tools, and strategies to help them manage chronic disease, identify symptoms and prevent the occurrence of additional symptoms and complications. Each participant receives resources in Spanish to support and encourage long-term behavior changes.
Health Education Radio Programs
In addition to on-site educational programs, Centro Tyrone Guzman staff provides information and motivates the Latino community through radio shows on such topics such as health insurance access, Centering Pregnancy classes, chronic disease prevention, and Alzheimer’s awareness.
